Heavy Water Plant (Hazira), a unit under Heavy Water Board, Department of Atomic Energy, is primarily responsible for production of Heavy Water (D2O) which is used as a 'moderator' and 'Coolant' in the nuclear power as well as research reactors. The production of heavy water is by using chemical exchange of NH3-H2 mono-thermal process. The plant is linked to the nitrogenous fertilizer plants for synthesis gas feed. With well defined safety policy, Heavy Water Plant (Hazira) has excellent safety records.
The main objective of HWP(Hazira) is to produce Heavy Water and to supply heavy water of required specification as per the directives from Heavy Water Board.
By implementing a variety of energy conservation schemes along with continuous monitoring, HWP(Hazira) has achieved considerable reduction in specific energy consumption in the production of Heavy Water. From a specific energy consumption 34.0 GJ/Kg of Heavy Water in the year 1991-92 it has come down to 23.0 GJ/Kg of Heavy Water.
