O-18 Enriched Water - H218O Water & Doubly Labeled Water (DLW)

Oxygen has three stable isotopes namely Oxygen-16, Oxygen-17 and Oxygen-18

Water naturally contains 0.204% of Oxygen-18. Water containing >95 % IP Oxygen-18 is called O-18 enriched water ( H218O Water), which is used in PET scanning.

Positron-Emission Tomography (PET) is a nuclear imaging technique that is used to observe metabolic processes in the body as an aid to the diagnosis of disease such as tumors, staging of cancer, metastasis, dementia, etc.

Gamma rays emitted indirectly by a positron-emitting radionuclide, i.e. Fluorine-18, which is generated in cyclotron by bombardment of proton on H218O and loaded on glucose to form Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), is scanned by the PET.

Specification of H218O Water:
O18 Enriched water >95 atom %
TOC <1 µg/g
pH 6 – 8
Conductivity <2 µS/cm

When water is partially enriched in oxygen-18 and deuterium then the resultant water is called Doubly Labeled Water (DLW).

DLW is used for physiological / metabolic studies.

Specification of DLW:
Doubly Labeled Water Any combination of deuterium and oxygen-18 concentration
TOC <1 µg/g
pH 6 – 8
Conductivity <2 µS/cm

To make H218O Water & DLW indigenously and economically available, HWB has set up a production facility for O-18 enriched water.
